“Hagerup has a surrealist knack for tapping into the little crooks of the brain, conjuring strange images that just feel both disconcerting and somehow right.”
Prewn
aka Izzy Hagerup
If Izzy Hagerup’s new album, ‘System’, feels immediately uncompromising it’s because it was never really designed for public consumption. Released under her Prewn moniker, Hagerup describes the album as a “private journal made public”. Told across nine arresting new songs, the album chronicles a deeply personal journey through the darkness of depression, but one that’s always undercut by moments of humor, selfishness and self-reflection, a push-and-pull that feels wholly distinctive.
“Hagerup’s guitar lines snake as they thrash; her balladry is grimy and expansive, steered by febrile vocals that recall mid-period Fiona Apple and the drone of the cello she played as a kid. Unexpected moments lurk, such as the shadowy slip into trip-hop on recent single 'Dirty Dog'.”
“Prewn’s sound is anything but boring. It’s raw, confusing, and soothing all at the same time. From winding guitar and emphatic stings, to ardent vocals and an exploratory vibe through the production, the sounds of Hagerup’s studio-cave bring forth her most experimental nature.”
“It's evident that the primal black hole of emotion her songs tap into is both a source of confirmation and unease. With her music, she wants to go deeper even though she identifies as someone that represses a lot of feelings.”
““Prewn’s unique take on gritty indie-rock, starring twisted cello lines and her distinctive vocal, have seen her likened to Fiona Apple and Wednesday…””
